Robin Press, a 22-year-old defenseman who played 30 games with the Indy Fuel last season, has been invited to the Chicago Blackhawks’ rookie tournament roster.
Drafted by Chicago in 2013, Press signed a contract with the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs last season. Of the 39 games he played in North America, 30 were with Indy and nine with Rockford.
The tournament will be played in Traverse City, Mich. from Sept. 8-12.
A number of young players under contract to Chicago and Rockford are on the roster. One position to keep an eye on is the goaltending spot. Often, the ECHL team’s goaltenders come from the NHL/AHL organization. Rookie Collin Delia is a Blackhawks signee who played for Merrimack in the NCAA last season, posting a 2.15 GAA. Matt Tomkins is signed to Rockford after posting a 2.48 GAA for Ohio State last season. Wouter Peeters, who played last season in Finland, is the third member of the goaltending trio.
Currently, the Blackhawks have four goaltenders under contract – Corey Crawford, Anton Forsberg, J.F. Berube and Jeff Glass, meaning Delia and Tomkins are likely to start the season as the Fuel’s goaltending tandem.
Other players to keep an eye on are Rockford signees Darren Raddysh and William Pelletier. Raddysh is a defenseman who had 81 points in 62 OHL games for Erie last season. Pelletier had seven points in eight games for Rockford a year ago. Other players to keep an eye on are those aging out of junior.
