John Bierchen, who most recently has been the head coach of the University of Alabama, has been named the Indy Fuel’s assistant coach.
Bierchen is the first full-time assistant in the team’s history. He will assist Bernie John, who is beginning his second full season as the Fuel’s head coach.
Bierchen is an Alabama graduate who was a goaltender for the Crimson Tide, a club team that competes in the ACHA Div. I. He began his coaching career as an assistant at NCAA Div. III SUNY-Canton in 2012-13 and then spent three years as an assistant with the SPHL’s Columbus Cottonmouths from 2013-16 – also suiting up in one game as a goaltender. He returned to Alabama and coached the Crimson Tide in 2016-17 and led the team to a 19-14-2 record.
Bierchen is a native of Clearwater, Fla. who recently celebrated his 30th birthday.
He becomes the fourth person to be an assistant coach with the Fuel. Current head coach Bernie John was an assistant prior to matriculating to the top job in 2016. Jan Jas served as an assistant from 2014-17 and Derek Edwardson in 2014-15.
