March 28 in Indianapolis hockey history

1940: The Capitals are eliminated from the 1940 IAHL playoffs by a 2-0 score. The Provicence Reds’ Mike Karakas posts his second shutout of the series to give the Reds a 3-2 series victory. Bobby Carse scores the series-winner on a power play in the third, and the Reds add a late goal to ice the series. The Reds would go on to win the Calder Cup.

1946: The Capitals are eliminated from the 1946 AHL playoffs with a 4-2 loss in Buffalo, giving the Bisons a 4-1 series victory. Cliff Simpson and Pete Leswick score for the Caps in the loss. The Bisons would go on to win their third championship in four years – eliminating the Caps in each season.

1958: The Chiefs fall 6-3 in Louisville to even the Turner Cup Final up at two games apiece. Sam Gregory, Myron Stankiewicz and Frank Kuzma score, but Cliff Hicks’ net is besieged – he makes 50 saves in the loss.

1976: The Racers run their unbeaten streak to 10 games (7-0-3), beating New England 3-1 in Hartford, taking first place in the process. Al Karlander scores twice and Brian McDonald pumps in the game-winner midway through the second.

1981: Back-to-back shutouts for the Checkers, as Rob Holland follows Jari Kaarela’s zero with one of his own the next night. He stops all 32 Wichita shots to beat the Wind 3-0. Garth MacGuigan’s 37th goal is the winner. Glen Duncan and Alex Pirus also score for the Checkers in front of 13,580 at MSA. It’s the second crowd of larger than 13,000 in three weeks for the Checkers.

1987: The Checkers suffer the worst loss in their history, as the Saginaw Hawks blank them 14-0. Warren Skorodenski makes 20 saves to shut out the Checkers.

1989: Ron Handy follows teammate Brent Sapergia into the 40-goal club with a tally, but Salt Lake’s Paul Ranheim scores a hat trick — goals 61, 62 and 63 on the year — and lifts the Golden Eagles to a 6-4 win at the Coliseum.

1997: The Ice play their first scoreless game in team history — at least in regulation. Jim Waite turns aside 24 shots, Grand Rapids’ Pokey Reddick stops 26. The game continued through a wild 15-round shootout that saw each team score twice in the first round, and three times in the next nine rounds. Brad Werenka finally broke the ice in Round 15 of the shootout, and Waite stopped Patrick Traverse on the other end to preserve the win. It was Werenka’s second goal of the shootout. The game was penalty-filled — the Ice had 57 penalty minutes, the Griffins 47 — and they combined for 0-for-11 on the power play.

1998: Andy MacIntyre has a hat trick and adds an assist in a 5-3 win over Houston at MSA. Craig Mills and David Ling score the other two goals. Eric Manlow and Ryan Risidore assist on two goals each.

2004: The last CHL victory for the Ice, and the last CHL game in Indianapolis. The Ice beat Shreveport 7-4 to even their series at two games apiece. Three power play goals key the attack. Jason Baird and Jared Dumba each score twice. Baird adds three assists for a five-point game. Bernie John adds a goal and two assists, as does Dave Gilmore. Jeff Sanger makes 41 saves in net.

2006: The Indiana Ice post their first-ever USHL playoff win when Todd McIlrath scores at 10:10 of overtime to beat Cedar Rapids 4-3 in Game 1 of their series at the Coliseum. McIlrath’s goal completes a natural hat trick that leads a comeback from a 3-1 first-period deficit. Edie Del Grosso assists on two goals, including the game-winner. John Kemp has a goal and two assists.

2014: Hayden Stewart allows more than two goals for the first time in 13 starts, but wins his club-record 13th straight game, beating Dubuque 5-4. Sam Kurker tallies two goals and Aidan Muir two assists. Joe Sullivan, Dwyer Tschantz and Matt Roy also score for the Ice.

2015: The longest winning streak in ECHL history comes to an end, as the Fuel snap South Carolina’s 23-game win streak with a 3-2 win over the Stingrays in front of a spirited crowd of 4,884 at the Coliseum. Chris DeSousa, Justin Holl and Garett Bembridge stake Indy to a 3-1 lead and Mac Carruth stops 36 shots. He stuffs Patrick Gaul on a second-period penalty shot.

Happy birthday to …

Joe Turner: Capitals goaltender in 1941-42. He backstopped 52 games that season, with a 34-10-7 record, four shutouts and a 2.44 GAA. In fact, the only games he didn’t play were all losses. In the playoffs, he was 7-3 with a 3.24 GAA, leading the Capitals to their first Calder Cup championship. He also played one game for the Red Wings that season, a 3-3 tie against Toronto on Feb. 5, 1942. One of the most promising prospects in hockey, Turner – like many hockey players – signed up for military service. He fought for the United States Army in World War II. He was killed in action during the Battle of the Bulge, listed as missing on Dec. 13, 1944. The International Hockey League named its championship trophy after him. A native of Windsor, Ont., he was born in 1919.

Tom Tilley: Ice defenseman for 25 games in 1994-95. He had two goals and 13 assists. Tilley came to the Ice after playing parts of four seasons with the St. Louis Blues – from 1989-91 and again in 1993-94. He also played for the Canadian National Team in the 1992 Olympics, and in europe. After his year with the Ice, he continued to play in the IHL for Atlanta, Milwaukee and Chicago through 2001. He had four goals and 38 assists in 174 NHL games, all with the Blues. A native of Trenton, Ont., he is 52.
