The ECHL’s Elmira Jackals announced they will cease operations at the end of the 2016-17 season and ask the league for a voluntary suspension.
They join the Alaska Aces in teams requesting a voluntary suspension for 2016-17. Two new teams will join the ECHL. One is the expansion Worcester Railers. The other is the Jacksonville IceMen, who moved from Evansville and will resume after a year off.
Elmira is completing its 10th season in the ECHL. The Jackals are coached by the Indy Fuel’s first captain, Mike Duco. The team began in 2000 as a member of the now-defunct United Hockey League and was one of several UHL teams to eventually migrate to the ECHL – joining Kalamazoo, Fort Wayne and Evansville.
The Jackals are affiliated with the Buffalo Sabres and Rochester Americans.
Barring future moves, the ECHL will have 27 teams next season.
