February 20 in Indianapolis hockey history
1943: Joe Fisher has a hat trick as the Capitals beat Hershey 6-2. Judd McAtee has two goals. Adam Brown and Connie Brown assist on three goals each in the win. Floyd Perras makes 27 saves to make it stand up.
1960: Howie Menard and Pierre Brillant both post four-point nights – a goal and three assists – in a 6-4 Chiefs victory over Louisville. Red Leger has a hat trick in front of a season-best crowd of 6,239. Gary Bird also has three assists in the win. A “riot” breaks out in the game as Chiefs coach Marcel Clements and Rebels coach Leo Gasparini fought after the game. Fans began hitting each other, women in the crowd begin calling for the national anthem to be played to quiet the crowd. Finally, the officials have the lights turned out in the arena to quell the issues.
1991: Brian Noonan has a five-point night with three goals and two assists in a 7-3 win in San Diego. He scores 1:11 into the game to get things started. Mike McNeill and Sean Williams scored in the first 5:11 ‘ assisted by Mike Stapleton and Noonan, respectively, to chase San Diego’s starting goaltender. Noonan added goals in the second and third periods. Sean Williams also scored twice and added an assist in the win.
1992: Steve Bancroft and Mike Stapleton each record three assists. Sean Williams and Brad Lauer score twice and add an assist each in a 6-5 shootout win over Salt Lake. Stapleton pots the shootout winner. The Ice rally from a three-goal deficit, with Rob Conn scoring at 9:31 of the third to tie the game. Lauer scored 26 seconds into the third period.
1999: Patrick Boileau scores with 55 seconds left on a feed from Chris Herperger, leading the Ice to a 2-1 shootout win in Utah, their third straight win. Cail MacLean and Dave Hymovitz score in the shootout and Geoff Sarjeant makes 36 saves in regulation and four in the shootout to seal the win.
2009: Torey Krug has a goal and two assists in a 4-1 win at Fargo. Stanislav Galiev adds two assists. Joe Hartman, Mike Cichy and Ben Alberton score the Ice’s other goals.
2010: The Ice win their sixth straight game, beating Fargo 7-4 on the road. Antti Roppo scores two late goals after Fargo had cut a five-goal lead to one. He adds an assist for a three-point night. Anthony Bitetto, David Johnstone and Blake Coleman each have a goal and an assist.
Happy birthday to …
Brent Gwidt: Ice center from 2006-09, and the captain of the 2009 Clark Cup champions. He played 171 games with the Ice, tallying 27 goals and 36 assists. He also had six goals and eight assists in 24 playoff games – including a 5-5-10 line in the 13 games en route to the Clark Cup in 2009. Gwidt was a sixth-round pick of the Capitals in 2006. He played four seasons at Nebraska-Omaha, tallying 39 points, and is currently in his third full season with the ECHL Utah Grizzlies, being named the team’s captain this season. A native of Minocqua, Wis., he is 29.
Tim Hall: Center who played five games for the Fuel in 2015-16. He came to the team on a tryout contract after playing collegiately at Colorado College, and playing two seasons for ECHL Alaska and two in Europe, and started the year in SPHL Peoria, but was called up to the Fuel midway through the year. He also played for Wheeling and retired mid-season in 2015-16. A native of Sewickley, Pa., he is 27.
