February 2 in Indianapolis hockey history
1949: The Capitals finish a nine-game winless streak with their third straight tie, knotting up a 2-2 game in Providence. Nels Podolsky has two assists.
1961: In a wild ending to a 5-3 loss to St. Paul, one of the 1,156 Chiefs fans in attendance is thrown onto the ice at the end of the game at the Coliseum. It was apparently a dispute over profanity
1977: Bob Sicinski caps a three-point night and a victory by scoring the game-winning goal with 7:55 left to give the Racers a 6-5 win over Quebec at MSA. Gene Peacosh had three assists, and Rene Leclerc scored twice in the win, his second goal tying the game early in the third.
1990: Brian Noonan scores a hat trick, Sean Williams has a goal and three assists, Cam Russell adds three assists and Jim Waite stops all 26 shots he sees in a 7-0 rout of Milwaukee at the Coliseum. It’s Noonan’s second hat trick in three games.
2002: The Ice eclipse their own CHL record with an attendance of 14,324 for Pack the House Night. Unfortunately, it results in a 7-5 loss to Fort Worth.
2003: Shawn Silver continues his hot streak, making his fifth shutout in a 4-0 victory over Wichita. It’s the third consecutive time he’s blanked the Thunder. Etienne Morin scores the game-winner.
2007: Eric Kattelus tallies a hat trick as the Ice beat Green Bay 4-3. He “hits for the cycle,” scoring shorthaned at 16:26 of the first, a power play goal at 19:11 of the period, and adding an even strength goal at 14:10 of the second. Jake Skjodt also scores for the Ice and Garrett Roe has two assists.

Marc Magnan: Checkers winger from 1984-87. A 10th-round pick of the Maple Leafs in 1981, Magnan came to Indy in 1984 and played all three seasons in the Checkers’ IHL history, with 35 goals and 83 assists in 218 games. He also totaled 876 penalty minutes. He played in all 18 of the team’s IHL playoff games, with a goal, four assists and 83 minutes in the sin bin. Magnan played six pro seasons from 1982-88, also playing in the Maple Leafs organization prior to coming to the Checkers (and four games with the Leafs in 1982-83, where he had an assist and a major penalty). He retired after playing 11 games in the 1987-88 season with the IHL’s Flint Spirits. A native of Edmonton, he is 55.
John Doherty: Ice forward in the 2011-12 season. In 41 games, he had three goals and seven assists. He also had a goal and an assist in six playoff games. Doherty played three years at Miami University from 2012-15, compiling three points in 31 career games. A native of Elmhurst, Ill., he is 24.
Jake Cass: Ice defenseman from 2012-14. In 49 games, he had a goal and nine assists. He finished the 2013-14 season with Sioux City, and is currently playing for the Minnesota Magicians in the Tier II NAHL. A native of Stillwater, Minn., he is 21.
