The Indy Fuel raised the curtain on the 2016-17 campaign with their first preseason game Friday, and had a solid performance in beating host Fort Wayne 4-3.
Cody Sharib scored twice and added an assist for the Fuel, who played the majority of their contracted players, but mixed in a few who are in camp on professional tryout offers – especially on the blueline.
Christian Finch and Alex Wideman had two-point nights in the victory.
Keegan Asmundson made 25 saves, outdueling the Komets’ Pat Nagle in a matchup of last season’s starting goaltenders.
The two teams return to the ice at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum for their final preseason game. The Fuel open the season Oct. 14 at home against Cincinnati.
Indy fell behind 2-0 in the first, but Alex Wideman scored just 1:16 after the Komets pushed the lead too two to bring Indy back. Sharib, who assisted on Wideman’s goal, tallied twice in the second period – once on the power play, once unassisted – to give the Fuel the lead. Randy Cure then scored the eventual winner at 3:58 of the third with a second power-play goal against his former team. Fort Wayne scored in the closing seconds to draw within one.
The Fuel were 2-for-5 with the man advantage, while Indy killed off two of its three penalty kills.
