The Indy Fuel announced the signing of their first player for the 2016-17 season Tuesday, inking right wing Martin Bellus.
Bellus, a 24-year-old who hails from Slovakia, brings size and physicality to the Fuel roster. He stands 6-foot-3, 190. Last season, he tallied eight goals, 11 assists and 168 penalty minutes playing for Piestany in the Slovak league. He led the Slovak Extraliga in penalty minutes in 2015-16. He comes from Spisska Nova Ves, the same hometown as former Fuel forward Adam Lapsansky.
In three seasons at the top levels in Slovakia and Kazakhstan, he has 26 gaoals, 33 assists and 343 penalty minutes in 156 games. He was part of the Kazakh championship team Ertis Pavlodar in 2014-15, with seven points in 14 playoff games.
“We are looking forward to having him come in to play,” Fuel coach Bernie John said in a team release. “We are looking to add size and skill this season and we feel Martin brings that. He uses his size to his ability and will play hard in the corners.”
