2016-17 Indy Fuel schedule & analysis

A host of new opponents and weekend home games will mark the Indy Fuel’s third ECHL season.

The Fuel will open the year at home for the third straight season, playing the Cincinnati Cyclones on Oct. 14 at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum – the team’s third different opening-night opponent.

The Fuel will play 32 of their 36 home games on weekends, with 11 on Fridays, 12 on Saturdays and nine Sunday afternoon home games. Again, the schedule will largely feature fellow Midwest Division teams, as the Fuel will face Cincinnati 12 times, Quad City 10 times and Fort Wayne nine times. Cincy and Quad City will visit Indy six times, Fort Wayne five.

Three of the four weeknight home games will be over holiday weeks – Tuesday, Dec. 20 and Thursday, Dec. 22 against Brampton, and a Thanksgiving Eve game against Kalamazoo.

Indy will make its first trip to Canada for a Dec. 7 game at Brampton. The Fuel will also face the Tulsa Oilers for the first time in team history on Oct 21. The Oilers will make two visits to Indy, starting on Oct. 28.

The Fuel will also face five other teams they did not see last season – Atlanta, Allen, Greenville, Reading and Alaska. Allen make its first of two visits to the Coliseum on Oct. 29 (and Indy will play four game at Allen), and Atlanta will visit the Coliseum Nov. 19-20, while the Fuel will travel to the other three cities. The team’s first-ever regular-season trip to Alaska will take place Nov. 9-12.

Indy will face 17 teams in the ECHL, including the entire Midwest, Central and North Divisions. They will not play Colorado, Idaho and Utah from the West Division; Orlando and Florida from the South Division; and Adirondack, Elmira, Manchester and Norfolk from the East Division. The ECHL will be a 27-team league next year, with Evansville going on a voluntary one-year suspension as it prepares to move to Owensboro, Ky.

Among key dates beside opening night, the Fuel will host Brampton on New Year’s Day – two days after facing Cincinnati on the night before New Year’s Eve at home, and traveling to Cincy the following nights.

The Fuel’s longest homestand will be Jan. 20-29, when they play six games in two consecutive weekends. They will also have a four-game homestand in November and play four of their final five games at home in April.

All Friday and Saturday home games will be played at 7:35 p.m. Sunday home games will be at 3:05 p.m. and weeknight games at 7:05 p.m.
