Game 2: Fuel at Fort Wayne

The back half of the Indy Fuel’s first weekend home-and-home against Fort Wayne started the same — with the Fuel jumping out to an early lead. Unfortunately, the Komets (2-0-0) were able to rally and beat the Fuel 4-3 Saturday at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

Jamie Wise gave the Fuel (0-1-1) a 1-0 lead midway through the first, and Robert Czarnik’s second goal in as many nights made it a 2-1 game 5:04 into the second. However, the Komets tallied twice in 2:03 midway through the period to take a 3-2 lead, and added the game-winner off the stick of Mitchell Heard early in the third.

Nick Jones had a power play goal for the Fuel late in the third, but Komets goaltender Pat Nagle prevented the equalizer.

The Fuel held a 34-27 shot advantage. Cody Reichard made 23 saves for the Fuel, making his first start.

  1. The Fuel’s power play has provided plenty of jump in two games this season. Saturday night, the Fuel were 2-4 with the man advantage, and the team is now 4-10 on the year. Three of the four goals have been scored with Robert Czarnik, Rhett Bly and Nick Jones on the ice — in fact, Czarnik has 2 goals and an assist, and Jones has a goal and 2 assists on the PP. Bly has two helpers. The two PPGs on Saturday were scored with a unit of Justin Holl and Jones on the back end, and Czarnik/Bly and either Garrett Klotz or Jamie Wise. The Fuel have generated twice as many PP chances as their foes – 10 to 5.
  2. More firsts: the first fight in Fuel history took just 151 seconds of Saturday’s game, as Klotz dropped the gloves with Cody Sol. Matt White and Fort Wayne’s Shawn Szydlowski also had a scrap in the second period.
  3. The Indy-Fort Wayne rivalry is definitely back. The two teams combined for 50 penalty minutes, but the Fuel stayed disciplined and only gave the Komets three power play opportunities.
  4. Nick Jones had five of the Fuel’s shots, a team high. Jamie Wise had four to go along with his first career professional goal.

Two minor lineup changes from Friday’s game: forward Johnny McGuire & defenseman Ildar Telyakov were in the lineup for the first time in the regular season.
Forwards: Rhett Bly, Brett Perlini, Mike Duco, Pete Massar, Jamie Wise, Patrick Cullen, Matt White, Johnny McGuire, Robert Czarnik, Garrett Klotz
Defensemen: Anders Franzon, Ildar Telyakov, Nick Jones, Mathieu Brisebois, Kirill Gotovets, Justin Holl
Goaltenders: Cody Reichard (starter), Mac Carruth

Next up: The Fuel have a four-game week next week. On Wednesday, they host the Kalamazoo Wings for a 7:05 p.m. puck drop at the Coliseum. They will host the Missouri Mavericks for Pink in the Rink night on Friday, before a quick Saturday-night roadtrip to Evansville. On Sunday, Oct. 26, they return home to face Fort Wayne in a 3:05 p.m. game.

Roster move: The Fuel announced Saturday that Dillon Fournier has been assigned to the Fuel from AHL Rockford. A 2012 second-round pick by the Blackhawks, Fournier is a 20-year-old rookie defenseman. Fournier was not in the lineup Saturday. He joins Mathieu Brisebois, Kirill Gotovets, Justin Holl, Jamie Wise and Mac Carruth as players under contract to either the Blackhawks or IceHogs on the Fuel roster. Defenseman Nick Jones is under contract to the AHL Worcester Sharks. Defenseman Nick Bruneteau was placed on reserve.
