The Indy Fuel have inked forward Cory Thorson of St. Cloud State University.

Thorson is a 6-2, 200-pound forward with a big body and a strong scoring touch. He scored 13 goals in 2012-13 — tied for fourth on the team — as the Huskies advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four. He had three goals and two assists in three NCAA Tournament games that year during St. Cloud’s run. Thorson had nine goals and 11 assists in 38 games this past season, his senior year, as St. Cloud went 22-11-5 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Thorson had an assist in St. Cloud’s 4-3 OT victory over Notre Dame in the opening round of the NCAA.

Over four years at St. Cloud, he had 28 goals and 29 assists in 141 games. While big and strong and a self-described power forward, he is very disciplined, with just 14 penalty minutes in four years of college hockey.

Prior to St. Cloud, he was a prolific scorer in the NAHL with the Owatonna Express, scoring 52 goals in two years.

Thorson was St. Cloud’s Most Improved Player as a sophomore. In 2009-10, he was one of the NAHL’s nominees for the Junior Hockey Player of the Year award.

“I’m very excited and thankful for this opportunity with the Fuel,” Thorson said in a team release. “(Coach Scott Hillman) is an energetic passionate guy who has a great record at the professional level.”

He is a 24-year-old left-shot forward from Crystal, Minnesota. Thorson becomes the seventh player to sign with the Fuel. He is the team’s fourth rookie and the fifth to play four years of college hockey prior to joining the Fuel.
