The Indy Fuel announced Thursday the signing of the ECHL franchise’s sixth player: rookie defenseman Zach Sternberg.
He becomes the second defenseman to be signed by the Fuel, joining Anders Franzon on the team’s blueline. Sternberg is the fourth Fuel player to come from the U.S. college ranks, as he played collegiately at Lake Superior State University.
He played 121 games for the Lakers, with 11 goals and 30 assists. He had 10 goals and 35 points total the last two seasons, playing 74 games for LSSU. As a junior, he was eighth in the CCHA in defenseman scoring, and he was second on the Lakers in defenseman scoring his senior year. He has also played for Canada at the Maccabiah Games in Israel.
“I certainly pride myself on playing fast,” Sternberg said in a team release. “I like to push the pace and jump up into the play while always taking care of my own zone.”
This will be his second time playing hockey in Indiana — he is a graduate of Culver Academy in Culver, Indiana.
The Toronto native stands 6-0, 187, and is a right-hand shot. He’ll turn 24 before the season begins.
